For example, the operating profit of Swiss retail and private banks was analyzed. Retail as well as private banks were able to increase their operating profit per FTE in 2021. Retail banks have surpassed the pre-pandemic level while private banks are still lagging behind.

The cost/income-ratio of Swiss retail banks has reached its lowest level within the observation period with a median of 61.7% at the end of 2021. The cost/income-ratio of the private banks has also improved and amounted to 80.8%. Compared to the retail banks, the median cost/income-ratio of private banks is 19 percentage points higher on average.
